KORO FOLA
Koro Fola means “Koro player”. The rhythm is performed with the Koro or Koroni (small Koro), a type of handheld woodblock played with a stick. This instrument gives musicians great freedom of movement and mobility.
The exact origin of this rhythm remains uncertain, but it was most likely created to honor the tradition of itinerant artists of the past.
The dunun patterns are derived from the basic rhythmic structures traditionally performed on the Koro.
The version presented here originates from the Sankaran region in Upper Guinea. Koro Fola is also called Koro Foli; the word Foli means “rhythm”.
