SOFA

Sofa means “war”. It is known to be a very old Malinke rhythm which was already played in the 13th century, during the reign of Soundiata Keïta, founder of the Mali Empire.

Sofa was originally played with a Bolon (string instrument ) for horseback warriors. Trained horses would perform a stepping dance on the rhythm, accompanied by songs extolling the warrior’s bravery.

Nowadays, Sofa is played by hunters, celebrating their accomplishments and their noble origins in the Mali Empire. It is also a little part of a bigger celebration during which the elder men are honored.

Sofa can be played to honor a very important and respected person, or for his death.
